PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Implement district health services program to best meet the needs of the student population on the assigned campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health and safety education for students and preventive health practices for students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:          

Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program

Valid registered nurse license (RN) from the Texas Board of Nursing

Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to implement policies and procedures

Ability to work well with children, parents, and staff

Competency in use of existing technology

 

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work with frequent interruptions; must maintain professional demeanor under stress; must have problem solving skills; occasional prolonged or irregular hours

Travel: Frequent in-district travel, occasional out of district travel

Regular attendance is an essential function

 

Minimum Experience:

Must have experience as a professional Registered Nurse

Experience as a pediatric nurse preferred

           

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Practice with in the defined limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  2. Participate in Nursing Peer Review.
  3. Comply with Texas Department of Health Regulations and District policy.
  4. Adhere to school board policy and administrative regulations.
  5. Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy. Make appropriate referrals as necessary.
  6. Serve as a health advocate for students.
  7. Serve as a health liaison between school, home, physician, and community.
  8. Review immunization records for compliance as mandated by state law.
  9. Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached.
  10. Assume responsibilities in epidemiological studies of communicable disease within the school district.
  11. Direct the work of licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and assigned health clinic aide(s).
  12. Maintain communication with the Principal and Program Director for Student Health Services.
  13. Maintain required certifications in CPR, Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis.
  14. Complete state mandated Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) requirements to maintain R.N. license.
  15. Provide staff in service programs on health topics.
  16. Write the health component of the Individual Educational plan as indicated.
  17. Participate on the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee, Crisis Team, and other designated committees.
  18. Prepare monthly reports and state annual reports on immunizations, vision, hearing and scoliosis.
  19. Coordinate a system of administration and management of medication given at school
  20. Participate in staff meetings and professional growth activities.
  21. Maintain accurate health records on each student.
  22. Develop and maintain current health care plans for students who need special nursing intervention during the school day.
  23. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  24. Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
  25. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
