PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with their students’ ability to derive full benefit from the educational program under the direction of a licensed supervisor.  Maintain speech and language special education records and documentation as directed by licensed supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree in speech therapy (communication disorders), a licensed supervisor (or supervisors) on record with the licensing bureau, and

Current license assistant in speech pathology in the state of Texas

                       

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge and skills in the area of speech pathology including intervention techniques

Ability to interpret data

Knowledge of habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions

Ability and willingness to assess and instruct students with disabilities and mange student behaviors

Excellent organizational, communication (both written and oral), and interpersonal skills

Ability to problem solve effectively

Must be able to provide therapy to students under the direction of supervisor.

           

Work Environment:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heaving lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting nonambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; requires in district travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure; learn and apply new skills and training efficiently

Regular attendance is an essential function

 

Minimum Experience:

Must have completed required practicum to receive Texas license as an assistant in Speech Pathology

                       

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:           

  1. Implement Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) goals and objectives for eligible students as designed by supervisor.
  2. Implement appropriate therapy techniques with identified students including provision of augmentative communication techniques with students identified with such needs with training and support of supervisor.
  3. Schedule time periods for therapy intervention during school hours in accordance with the time recommended on each I.E. P. and within State Board of Education Guidelines.                
  4. Schedule planning, documented conference time periods in accordance with State and Federal Guidelines. An uninterrupted planning time for therapy activities of 45 minutes a day should be implemented per AISD policy.
  5. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee meetings, if appropriate, with supervisor or as provided for in licensing regulations.
  6. Attend appropriate staff development activities to increase skills in the area of speech therapy as needed and as approved by principal.
  7. Maintain accurate, legible, properly updated, and properly filed records, including eligibility folders, IEP updates, and PEIMS reporting as directed by supervisor. Document contacts with parents and/or staff.
  8. Maintain daily lesson plans based on each student's I.E.P. goals and objectives and submit to supervisor/principal upon request.
  9. Attend regularly scheduled speech therapy meetings and staff development.
  10. Maintain accurate daily therapy session documentation to be used in determining student progress and SHARS billing.
  11. Follow all regular procedures of the district and the individual campus in regard to leave time, absences, in-service days, and duties. Follow all local, state, and federal guidelines for special education.
  12. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  13. Maintain confidentiality.
  14. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  15. Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
  16. Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None- The licensed assistant in speech pathology will be supervised by a licensed speech pathologist,

licensed in the state of Texas in accordance with the rules and regulations of the licensing board.
